The Hit It Tool or Hit Tool was designed to assist rescue personnel in driving 4 foot by 1 inch cold-rolled steel pickets into the ground. Pickets are used to create an anchor point where one does not exist for a rope rescue event.
The Hit Tool gives rescue personnel a 3 times larger target to hit when driving a picket into the ground, thus helping to reduce injury and requiring fewer personnel to complete the task per current methods being employed.
Instructions for use:
Place one Hit Tool on a picket to be driven into the ground. Use the 4 lb. drilling hammer to drive the picket far enough into the ground so it is secure and will stand up on its own. Take the 4 lb. drilling hammer with you to the location you have selected for the second picket.
Another member of the crew uses a long-handled 6 or 8 lb. sledgehammer to complete driving the first picket to the correct depth. At the same time, the second picket is being driven into place with the second Hit Tool and the 4 lb. drilling hammer.
Once the second picket is secure and will stand up on its own, move to the location you have selected for the third picket, taking the 4 lb. drilling hammer and the second Hit Tool with you.
When the first picket has been driven to the correct depth, take the Hit Tool off the first picket and place it on the second picket; then drive the picket with the long-handled sledgehammer to the desired depth. Repeat the process with the third picket.
Once you have completed wrapping the webbing between the pickets, per your Rescue Systems One training, place the windlass in the correct position and take up tension on the webbing. When you are satisfied with the tension, place the Hit Tool with the small channel welded to the side on top of the windlass.
Use the 4 lb. drilling hammer to drive the windlass to the proper depth. Repeat the same process with the second windlass. Repeat as necessary with additional picket systems.
